The year was 2018. Emma was about to embark on her third year of medical school. She knew without a doubt there was no way she was going to have any time actually to go out and meet people to date. So she got on her phone and downloaded what many millennials were turning to at the time, Tinder. Tinder provided a convenient (cough, cough lazy) way to identify all of the eligible bachelors within a 1-mile radius of her apartment.

One night in June, she came across a cute guy who had gone to Amherst College and had stated that ice cream and coffee would be ideal dates. Lo and behold, Emma’s two favorite things (besides cats). She swiped right, and what do you know, a match!

Three blocks away, Steven’s phone lit up, “have you ever had an affogato?” And that kicked off the planning for their first date, a drink at a bar. It would take about another year for Emma to fully understand Steven’s bio when he wrote his ideal date was “coffee, ice cream, or ISO-8601 (YYYY-MM-DD)”. And it would take another three years before they would share their first affogato together.

As time went on, it became clearer to both that each other was “the one.” Steven arranged to work remotely. The couple packed up a UHaul and drove to Baltimore to begin Emma’s residency. Within the week of moving, Bean and Peanut joined the family.

And the rest is history, or really the future because Emma and Steven are only just getting started.

Steven and Emma chose the Boston Public Library (BPL) as their wedding location because of their shared love for books, used books in particular. No matter what city they are in, they will find a used book store and stroll for hours among the shelves and consider that a great date. They are proud to say that their Harry Potter Collection is a completed set from many different bookstores. Though Emma and Steven never visited the BPL together while living in Boston, it was a place both of them enjoyed, and hope to continue the tradition of having great dates (including their wedding) at used book locations.
